How LCWU GPA and CGPA are calculated
Lahore College for Women University grades on marks. Its Examination Regulations say the final grade in each course is awarded on the marks obtained, and then turned into grade points. The percentage bands are fixed, so you can work out your grade before results are announced.
LCWU shares an unusual feature with GC University Lahore. A+ is the 4.0 grade, and a plain A is worth 3.7. There is no A- on the scale. If you assume an LCWU A is worth 4.00, you will overstate your CGPA on every A you hold. This is the most common mistake generic calculators make on LCWU transcripts.
The bottom of the scale is unusual too. C- covers 51–54, and D is the single mark 50. Below 50 is an F. That is the regulation as published, not a typing error on our part, and it leaves almost no cushion between passing and failing.
The Formula
Grade Point (GP) = Numeric Value of Grade × Credit HoursGPA = Σ GP ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ GP ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semestersThis follows LCWU's own definitions from its Examination Regulations. An F scores 0.0 grade points, and its credit hours stay in the divisor.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's GPA
A 15-credit-hour semester using LCWU's numeric grade values.
| Course 1, 3 CH, A+ (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 3 CH, A (3.70) | 3 × 3.70 = 11.10 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.30) | 3 × 3.30 = 9.90 |
| Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, B- (2.70) | 3 × 2.70 = 8.10 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 11.10 + 9.90 + 9.00 + 8.10 = 50.10 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15 |
Example 2: the one-mark D band
Three students on 49, 50 and 51 marks in the same 3-credit course.
| 49 marks, below 50 | F → 3 × 0.00 = 0.00 |
|---|---|
| 50 marks, the D band is exactly 50 | D → 3 × 1.00 = 3.00 |
| 51 marks, C- covers 51 to 54 | C- → 3 × 1.70 = 5.10 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an LCWU A really worth 3.7?
Yes. The LCWU Examination Regulations list A+ as 4.0 (Outstanding) for 85 and above, and A as 3.7 (Excellent) for 80–84. There is no A- on the scale. This is the opposite of most universities, where A is the top grade. Any calculator that treats an LCWU A as 4.00 overstates your CGPA by 0.3 for every A.
Is the D grade really just one mark?
Yes. The regulations set D at 50 exactly, with C- covering 51–54 and F applying to anything less than 50. It is the narrowest band on the scale, which means a single mark decides between failing a course and earning a C-.
Does LCWU grade on marks or on a curve?
On marks. The regulations say the final grade in each course is awarded on the marks the student obtained, and those grades are then turned into grade points. So the percentage bands are fixed and public, and you can work out your grade before results are announced.
Is there a D+ grade at LCWU?
No. The scale has ten grades: A+, A, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D and F. There is no A- at the top and no D+ near the bottom, so the steps between some grades are wider than on the eleven-grade HEC table.
What does an "I" grade mean on my transcript?
Incomplete. It carries no numeric value and no grade points, so it is not offered as an option in the calculator. The regulations also record a "Not Eligible for Final Examination" status, which is treated as a fail. Leave incomplete courses out until they convert to a real letter grade.
Does an F count towards my LCWU CGPA?
Yes, and it hurts twice. An F is worth 0.0 grade points, and its credit hours stay in the divisor. Enter it as a normal row with its real credit hours.
